Uses of the knots:
Thumb knot:
-prevents ropes from fraying
-stops rope from slipping through a knot or hole
-provides a handhold
Figure-of-eight knot:
-stops knot from slipping through a knot or hole
-easier to tie and untie when under strain as compared to thumbknot
Bowline:
-secure a rope to a ring or eye-forms loop which will not slip, but unties easily
-used in life-saving and rescue work
Reef knot:
-for joining together two ropes of equal size
-used for parcel tying-for first aid bandaging
Sheet bend:
-joins two rope together, especially those of different thickness
-tying a rope to a loop
Fisherman's knot:
-joining together 2 wet or slippery ropes of similar size
-joining ropes together, especially those with small and unequal thickness
Sheepshank:
-shortens rope without cutting
-bypass worn section in centre of the knot, which will not be under strain
-shortens long rope especially when both ends are fastened
Clove hitch:
-for securing a rope to a railing or similar object
-starting and ending of most types of lashings, gadet making and pioneering
-tying it over an object that is opened at one end
-making rope ladders
Timber hitch:
-a very secure hitch to pass round a log or wide railing
Slip knot:
-used in tent pitching
